The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Khon Kaen University was founded on July 18, 1978.
The foundation of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as the 7th Faculty of Khon Kaen Univerity firmly aimed to gather scholars who were scattered across different faculties in the fields of humanities and social sciences into the same organization; to facilitate instruction in the area of humanities and social sciences; and to control the academic quality and unity of University administration. Initially, there were only 4 departments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences during the first era, namely the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of Library Science (once under the Faculty of Science and Arts), the Deparment of Social Sciences, and the Department of Humanities.

AIDs Network Development Foundation, Northeastern Office based in Khon Kaen Province founded in 1997. The foundation aims to enhance capacity of local authorities, organizations and communities regarding prevention and reduction of HIV/AIDs and related issues based in Northeastern Thailand. AIDs Net NE programs reduction of spread out of HIV/AIDs, prevention new HIV/AIDs affected and eradication an aversion on people who live with HIV/AIDs and illness in Northeastern region. Moreover, the organization implemented project called The Prevention of HIV/AIDS among Migrant Workers in Thailand Project (PHAMIT), targeted in Burmese, Lagosian, and Cambodian workers based in 6 Northeastern Provinces including Champasak Province, Lao P.D.R. In 2009, Tai-Loei Institute for child and youth development started grouping themselves named “Kum-Kor-Karn-Dee” as group of child and youth doing good things for home-communities. They renovated old public child-care center into community’s library and promote book-reading and distributing folk-stories to 3-12 year olds children within 10 communities. Increasingly, many child and youth from surrounding communities freely volunteer whilst youth leadership development program is continually conducted. Famously, various authorities, informal education office, local administrative organization and communities have been collaboratively working together with the group. Ubon Ratchathani Province Civil Society Foundation is non-governmental organization based in Ubon Ratchathani Province. The organization originally composes of multi-disciplinary such as government, non-government, privet and non-government sector. Areas of works are citizenships building, public policy advocacy, media production for social development and election monitoring movements, civil society organizations strengthened and human recourse development and public platform organization. Obviously, practitioner courses produced like social development and participatory public policy advocacy, knowledge management of health care and accessibility. Health and Share Foundation (HSF) founded in 2012. Previously, organization was a former international agency, worked in Thailand named SHARE: Services for the Health in Asian and African Regions. In 1990, SHARE worked for human resource development particularly in health care and services, based in Ubon Ratchathani and Amnatcharoen Province, Northeastern Thailand. In 2008, SHARE Thailand landed to work in Thai-Lao Border areas, located in Khemmarat, Na-Tan and Pho-Sai District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. HSF aims to enhance community and vulnerable people in regrading HIV/AIDs and health issue, and to build up self-awareness toward health care and services effectively. EFFU is project funded by European Union (EU), working by Ubon Ratchathani University together with Ubon Ratchathani Civil Society Foundation in 2012. It aims to strengthen small-scale farmers in Ubon Ratchathani Province about sustainable agriculture and climate change adaptation. Specially, EFFU expertise in organic rice production that will eventually generate farmers’ incomes. Organic Agriculture Cooperative establishes to maintain food security and incomes generation in the midst of climate change, risks and adaptation. Achievements toward sustainable agriculture is importance of both practical knowledge and academic documents. Integrated organic farming initiatives and action research in agriculture adaptation and risk management have been taken into account of provincial policy advocacy. The Tabalprai Center is a center for local herbs knowledge and practices, based in Surin Province, Northestern Thailand. Originally, the center achieve most of local wisdom in alternative treatments such as massage, food and process, herbs and oil therapy, fortune teller and rituals. To promote self-autonomous in health care systems, local wises and practitioners including illness have been learning through treatment provided and maintained physical and mental from original root. Forest where herbs and wild plants and spirits habitat is matter concerns as same as ritual of cures. Community where is surrounding forest areas are important to strengthen and promote of forest preservation and production. To revitalize local and traditional medicine, the center supports network to plant and apply herbs for healing illness. This organization is working for reduce and withdraw alcohol drinking in both rural and urban areas, based in lower Northeastern Thailand. Main activities are policy advocacy particularly in alcohol regulation and its enforcement at all levels as well as campaigning awareness of liquor business’s CSR. Moreover, the organization is seriously shifting people attitudes on “free alcohol day” in rituals practices, especially for 3 months Buddhist lent durations. NET Foundation founded in 1981 by group of Non-Governmental Organization together with international agencies. Since then, the organization has been conducting integrated community development and leader’s capacity development program. Fields of works vary to health, HIV/AIDs, sufficiency economy, sustainable agriculture and environment management including renewable energy. The organization also provides services such as complex training center and course, facilitators, study tour including research and monitoring and evaluation program nationally and internationally. Thai Concern Foundation (TCF) starts working since 1998 in which head office was located in Chiang Mai Province, Northern Thailand. Then, the organization moved to locate in Khon Kaen Province, Northeastern Thailand. Fields of works are varied on HIV/AIDS, T.B., adolescent pregnancy, livelihood of vulnerable child and sexuality health. Target groups are child and youth in rural and urban areas, parents, local administrative organization, local public health office, local school, child and youth shelter including local community. Friends of Homeless Office is a small group of people who is working to approach homeless’ livelihood development and social inclusive, targeted in Khon Kaen Province. Fields of works, there are respectively works toward capacity development individually and organizationally, research and knowledge management, social communication creation as well as rights based services and accessibility. The project is granted by Thai Health Promotion Fund which collaboratively implements together with regionally governmental agencies. Khon Kaen School for the Blind is the first school for the blind in the Northeastern Thailand. It was founded by the blind teacher named Ajarn Prayad Phunong-aong since 1978. Officially, the Blinded Foundation for the Blind in Thailand under the royal patronage registered the school as private special school based on Act of Private School in 1982, section 15 (3) a regular school teaching student who has ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์eyes impaired. The school opened and has been teaching the blind students since May 16, 1985 (pre-primary 1 to primary 6). Practically, the school prepares blind students in braille skills (reading and writing) and enabling students’ innovation and technology applicable. The school also trains students for daily living skills called orientation and mobility. The Thai Baan Association (TBA) is founded in 2011, located in Maha Sarakham Province. The organization is implementing in a form of project as named “Peasant Community School” for strengthening both individuals and organization. Areas of works target in community economy, child and youth development, sustainable agriculture and food security, natural resources management, cultural-eco-tourism, social enterprise, alternative education and international volunteer exchange program. In 2005, WWF Thailand, particularly in Freshwater program together with WWF Lower Mekong Sub-region Office has strategized Songkhram River Basin into freshwater priority landscape of WWF Thailand. Then, office based in Sri-songkhram District, Nakorn Phanom Province has been carrying project named “wetland revitalization in lower Songkhram River Basin”. This project is undertaken by provincial office based. The organization prioritizes to assess impacts of climate change locally as well as quality and quantity of freshwater that will eventually create hydrology model. The Mueang Phon Rescue Association is founded in 2006. It was developing from a group of community radio named “Mueang Phon Citizen” and communication radio Mueang Phon in order to rescue victims from any accident and disaster cases within Mueang Phon District and neighboring districts, Khon Kaen Province. The organization conducts training and workshop regarding rescue both accidence and disaster, primary helping accidental victims, transferring into hospital as well as voluntary in social services. Social development association is founded in 2006, based in Bangkok, working in areas of HIV/AIDs, TB, drugs sexual education, reproductive health and social welfare including protection and prevention community related social issues. Prior to expanding target areas, the SDA has set regional office based in Kalasin Province, coverage upper Northeastern provinces. Its areas of works vary on HIV/AIDs prevention as well as adolescent pregnancy prevention and cases transferred. Network of Mekong River Basin’s Community Organizations Council based in 7 Northeastern Provinces is community based organization network, originally established in 2009, target in 7 Northeast Provinces along Mekong River Basin. Areas of works are covered in integrated natural resources management nationally and internationally, rights base approach, strengthening capacity of community based organizations socio-economically, farmers’ database management, disaster and risk reduction and management and alternative documents related river and surrounding community protection as well as social campaign development including community based research regarding sustainable livelihood and bio-diversity systems.
